Discovery Charter School

An integrated, place-based curriculum.

breakfast and lunch program

The breakfast and lunch program at Discovery Charter School helps meet two main goals of the school: improving the health and well-being of students and improving the health and well-being of the community. The nation’s current approach to food is taking a heavy toll on our nation’s children and environment. The alarming increase in obesity, diabetes, allergies, and other problems in young children, is often traceable to an emphasis on fast, unhealthy, processed foods. Another concern is the damage to our environment caused by wasteful product packaging, harmful fertilizers and pesticides and excessive energy use encouraged by consumption practices that do not consider season or location in choosing food.

In our breakfast and lunch program we emphasize healthful whole foods, organic and local when possible. We’ve contracted with a food provider that shares a similar mission and we offer a purchased lunch option for busy parents that is cost-effective and healthy. Breakfast and lunch will be prepared by FSP (message from FSP) (sample menu). We also encourage “waste-free” lunches by asking parents, and our food vendors, to use reusable containers, cloth napkins and non-disposable silverware. In our view, a school lunch program can provide a unique classroom to overcome the negative health and environmental trends caused by our current food habits.
